Challenges of Newcomers to Canada

Newcomers to Canada often share the challenges in finding employment commensurate with their experience and organizational level in their home countries.

If that’s your current situation, we’d like to offer our “two cents”:

1. If you uproot a tree and plant it in another place, with all things being equal, it will still take at least one season to uphold the roots again. Starting over in a completely new country is a long journey, and setting roots will take one year at minimum. The message is: trust the process. You are in a path of development and growth in this process.

2. The pandemic hit all of us very hard across the globe. Canada is no exception to these difficulties. Many businesses, large and small, were affected and many individuals lost their jobs. Regardless of years of experience, many employees across industries were laid off. The good thing is that we are on a steady path of recovery as companies are starting to grow their businesses again.

3. Extraordinary situations require extraordinary thinking. This may sound philosophical. However, if you find your own personal ways of applying it, you will likely expand your perspectives. You are going through an extraordinary situation right now. Make goals and plans, both for the short and long term. Read, research, and talk to people who could help you think beyond your current challenges.

4. Cultivate and keep a growth mindset. During your job search and settlement process, it’s natural to face challenges and setbacks, but maintaining a growth mindset will help you be more resilient. Think of roadblocks as opportunities to learn new things along the way. This is a quote that we like: “Besides Gravity, nothing can keep me down.” How you approach your day to day will influence the chances you get.

5. Your network is your net worth. You may have heard this one many times. But it’s 100% true! Finding the right people in Canada will take some time. Spend time each week actively networking and learning. Approach people on LinkedIn, try to have meaningful one-on-one conversations with them, and find ways to provide value. These steps will be like small investments you’re making in your future.

At SHRC, we value each and every candidate, newcomer or not. Feel free to contact us if you are currently looking for opportunities.
